Flash Fiction Short Story Contest

Flash Fiction is a short story contest with cash prizes on the line!

We are challenging you to write the next great piece of short-form literary fiction.

Entries will be accepted until August 1st, 2024.

We will also have Flash Fiction workshops for students this summer in case they need to bounce their ideas off of their fellow writers, or just need a quiet place to get the ideas flowing.

Rules and Information

  • Age categories:
    • 5th-8th Grade
    • 9th-12th Grade
    • Adult
  • $100 each will be awarded to the 1st place winners in their respective categories. 2nd place will receive $50 each. 3rd place will receive $25 each. Winning stories will also be published in the library’s newsletter and website.

 

  • Writers may only submit stories respective to their age category (i.e. an adult writer may not submit a story in the 5th-8th Grade category)

 

  • Must be short fiction prose between 500–2,500 words
  • Must be in English
  • Must be typed, not handwritten. Font should be 12 point Calibri or Times New Roman.

 

  • Stories must be works of imagination by the writer and will be judged on originality, good story telling, and criteria such as grammar, organization, characters, setting, etc.
  • Stories must include the following line in some way: “I read it in a book…”

 

  • All stories must include a cover sheet with title, author’s name, age category, and contact information.
  • To facilitate blind judging, your name and contact information must not appear on other pages of the story – only the cover sheet.
  • Multiple entries by a single individual is not allowed.

 

  • Submission Options:

  • Submission Deadline is August 1, 2024. Winners will be announced on August 20, 2024.
